What is a Kua Number (Ming Gua)?
Kua Number (also known as Ming Gua) is a personal Feng Shui number calculated from your birth year and gender. It's one of the most fundamental concepts in Feng Shui, used to determine your personal auspicious and inauspicious directions. These directions influence where you should face when sleeping, working, studying, and even sitting.
Your Kua number falls into one of two groups: East Group (Kua numbers 1, 3, 4, 9) or West Group (Kua numbers 2, 6, 7, 8). Each group has its own set of four auspicious directions and four inauspicious directions that are unique to your personal energy.
East Group
People with Kua numbers 1, 3, 4, or 9 belong to the East Group. Their auspicious directions are typically in the eastern and southeastern sectors, bringing harmony and positive energy.
West Group
People with Kua numbers 2, 6, 7, or 8 belong to the West Group. Their auspicious directions are typically in the western and northwestern sectors, providing stability and success.
Fun Fact
The Kua number calculation differs slightly between males and females, and there are special rules for years from 2000 onward. The number 5 is considered special in Feng Shui - if your calculation results in 5, it's automatically adjusted to either 2 (for males) or 8 (for females) to maintain balance.
Understanding Your Auspicious and Inauspicious Directions
Once you know your Kua number, you'll discover four auspicious directions and four inauspicious directions. Each direction has specific meanings and applications in your daily life:
